Where: Fiction Bar
Entrance: R50 gets you in

We are proud to present DJ ONEMAN as the guest for our THIRD BIRTHDAY bash. His style resembles that of Step Up in its diversity and attention to referencing the roots of what we now know as dubstep. Oneman plays a lot of old tunes, an exception in a scene obsessed with the perpetual “moving forward never backwards” motion of dubplate culture. Again, as such a DJ, he should be confined to the ranks of the many DJs out there. But in 2007 and into 2008, Oneman most definitely moved ahead of the pack. In 2007, getting booked for London’s two flagship clubs, Forward (in the warm up slot) and DMZ (in the closing slot), but in truth, he’d already built a considerable following with his show and sets at illegal raves like http://www.myspace.com/houseandchicken ‘I just wanna make people dance and people dance to good beats,’ says Oneman. Few epitomized what an incredible year 2010 was as DJ Oneman, this column’s DJ of the year. When Loefah put him forward for Mary Anne Hobbs’ Generation Bass showcase in 2008, his talent as a DJ was undeniable, yet mixing early DMZ releases into old UK garage records will only take you so far. Instead he spent the next two years walking a new path, eventually ushering in a new generation of producers and sounds distinct from the grime, funky, dubstep, and garage scenes that inspired them. By summer, armed with peerless mixing skills and new Serato tricks, Oneman would reach Slimzee circa 2003, Hatcha ’04, or DMZ ’06 levels of creativity, putting clear water between himself and the very hot competition. He broke one of the records of the year, Girl Unit’s “Wut”, and launched his 502 label with two fresh new artists, Fis-T and Jay Weed. “Oneman has almost single-handedly re-invented old school garage – taking the art of djing to a new level – recontextualising 2 step garage into dubstep, grime, funky, ‘wonky’ and beyond. He is the only artist ever to appear on Mary Anne Hobb’s BBC Radio 1 show without releasing a single record.” – Cargo, London. “It’s a kind of an unwritten rule but by and large to become a big DJ in dubstep you need either two things: An incredible arsenal of new dubplates, or a talent for production such that you have, well, an incredible arsenal of new dubplates. But recently a DJ has managed a steep climb up the scene’s ranks without either. He is DJ Oneman.” – Martin Clark, Pitchfork FREEKICKS International man of mystery, freekicks hails form the UK but has taken the long road to his current home in South Africa – through the US, Spain and Germany, where he’s picked up musical influences and dj’d to some of the most demanding crowds; in London, SF, and Berlin. The amateur dj extraordinaire, he rarely plays at anything more commercial than a house party… but what a party! Unabashedly bemused by genre distinctions, freekicks throws 2-step, house, dubstep, techno, reggae and anything in between into the mix, holding it all together with a track selection that reflects his own distinct vibe, sometimes tongue-in-cheek, sometimes dark and brooding but always pounding… not to mention a penchant for disjointed beats that’s reflected in the name: freekicks. http://www.mixcloud.com/freekicks/ RESIDENTS ISH FUNAFUJI BLOTCHY MC GINGA COBRA pon di mic !
