On the 15th of May, YESTERDAYʼS PUPIL officially released the third part of his new album. Part 3 – entitled FORMATIVE YEARS, comes after the release of Part 2 (Duel!) in January 2012, and Part 1 (Singularity) in November 2011.

“I think Part 3 is the part where people can start seeing a little glimpse of the album as a whole. I chose the title because everyone has formative years, and also because it relates well to the two songs; they are about growing up and being human.”

MUSCLE&SKIN was originally intended to be on his first album, Errors of Enthusiasm, but never made it on the album due to the regular load shedding that was taking place in South Africa during that time, 2007.

“I lost the song to the power being cut in the middle of the recording process. I did not re-record the song, I instead just put the preproduction version of the song on the album as is and called it ʻThe Load Shedʼ as a painful reminder that electricity is a luxury.”

Four years went by before he was inspired to settle the score and record the song again. A lot has changed from the original idea – lyrically and musically the song has had time to mature and has grown a lot since its original idea.

Yesterday’s Pupil started working on TALK LIKE STONES on a plane to Cape Town about a year and a half ago and it revolves around the thought of what would two stones in the bottom of a well talk about if they could talk? We know that there is no chance of them ever getting out, because stones can’t climb, so they are destined to just lie there next to one another for eternity with nothing to do but talk.

“My best friend has been in out of several psychiatric wards during the past few years, often for months at a time. He is schizophrenic, he never used to be, but who knows how these things work. It was a strange thing to witness how someone you know so well can become so lost within his own mind. We would speak about all kinds of things during our visits, and sometimes we would not speak at all.

I would wonder if some of the things he saw weren’t more real than what we perceive reality to be, perhaps amongst all the delusions there were a few truths that we are not supposed to see. I believe that we are all spiritual beings having a physical experience. I can see it in him. Somehow there is a connection between this song and this experience, perhaps not directly, but in a way that we understand.”

Part 4 is set for release in July 2012.

Tannhäuser Gate is the new synth heavy project of Wild Eyes members Gareth Dawson and Len Cockraft. Featuring a geargasmic, all analog setup – which includes a Korg MS20 &  MS2000, a Roland JP-8000 and Yamaha CS15 sequenced on an Electribe and an Akai MPC 1000 – their sound is remiscent of the Electroclash sound of the early 2000s, itself a throw back to 80s electro and new wave. With an upcoming release on the US based Flexi Wave record label and already performing a fully live show, 2012 is bound to be a massive year for this duo. Keep your eyes peeled for gigs and listen to their latest demo track below.

Petite Noir is the solo project of Popskarr lead singer Iamwaves and as the name implies, is a little dark. His vocals are tinged with melancholy reminiscent of Joy Divisions’ Ian Curtis. Style vs Sound April

Our good friend Data Takashi runs an awesome party at Kitchener’s Carvery in Jhb; It’s called Style Vs Sound (Style vs Fashion & Broaden A New Sound presents) which is a monthly party on the last Thursday of every month throwing down pop-up sweat shops & future bass booty shaking!

MR SAKITUMI & THE GRRRL have just launched their music video for JUNGLE JIMMY.

Jungle Jimmy is the first music video for Mr Sakitumi’s debut album, Secret Asian Man, released in 2011. The video was conceptualized, shot, directed and edited by The Grrrl, in collaboration with the Hodgen family. All the characters took around three months to come to life and the video was filmed over a period of two days in January this year.

“Colourful, cute, vibrant intrigue. It’s Sherlock Holmes meeting the caterpillar from Alice In Wonderland.”

The video can be described as a play on the name of the track – a world on a world within a world. There are also many other subtle meanings woven into it, all which can be interpreted in a personal way by the viewer; deeply layered or just fun filled and playful.

“I always wanted to interpret the music of Jungle Jimmy with various finger puppets and fun handmade characters waking up and bopping to the beat. While chatting to Bev Hodgen, the textile artist, we discovered artworks by Nick Cave. This inspired me to develop the idea and environment further, bringing Jungle Jimmy to life.” – says The Grrrl.

Mr Sakitumi & The Grrrl wanted to have a strong concept. Thus they waited for the perfect idea in order to release a great first video. The visuals portray and represent The Grrrl’s current style and artistic direction and are a perfect fit for the music from Jungle Jimmy.

“Like a hand in a glove, like a key in a lock, like a Friday fits into a great weekend. Visually it fits the track in every possible way, from the playfulness to the overall mood.” – Mr Sakitumi.
