STEP UP AND OLMECA PRESENT MALA (DMZ)

If you love dubstep and know its roots and beginnings you will be as excited as we are to present one of the founding fathers.

Half of Digital Mystikz and co-founder of the DMZ label Mala is one of those characters that have played a vital part in forming the dubstep scene.

“We started the label because we wanted to represent ourselves, we wanted not to be misrepresented. At that time there wasn’t really going on much else. There were a few labels like Big Apple and Tempa, but nobody really knew how to call the music, everybody was calling it something different. So we thought we should call it the DMZ sound, so people could understand where it was coming from.”

Along with Coki and Loefah he runs the DMZ night at Mass in Brixton, which has been described as one of the two most influential nights of the scene. The set up is reminiscent of the old reggae soundsystems with DJ’s mixing it up, playing tunes in between each other and being supported by their MC Sgt Pokes. The energy created at DMZ is second to none and is well described by their slogan “come meditate on bass weight”. Meditation to bass lines is what happens.

His discography is vast and boasts signature tracks such as Anti-war dub, Blue Notez, Left Leg Out and the spooky Level Nine. The DMZ sound is easily distinguishable and in a time where dubstep has moved so far from any sort of musicality and soul, it is a breath of fresh air.
