The Watermark High is a band from Gauteng, South Africa. Their line-up comprises Paul van der Walt (electric guitar, acoustic guitar, keyboard, programming, lyrics, bass and vocals), Robin McDonald (acoustic drums, electronic drum pads, keyboard and live electronics) and Adrian Erasmus (bass, electric guitar, slide guitar, keyboard and backing vocals).
The band’s sound reflects their wide variety of influences ranging from post-rock to electronica/IDM to ambient and everything in-between. The Watermark High started out as the acoustic solo project of Paul van der Walt, back in 2003. The band since went through various incarnations and line-ups and have independently released two EPs to date, “(What) Are You Thinking?” (2003) and “Disappear With Me” (2008).
Their aim is to create music that is evocative and experimental, dabbling in and merging the down-tempo and beautiful side of both rock and electronic music, playing songs that are both instrumental and semi-instrumental. The band also embraces the use of various instruments, with each member often switching roles from song to song.
The Watermark High’s debut 11 track album, “Loneliness As An Art Form“, was self-produced and recorded at Anti-Motion Studios in Johannesburg between August and September 2009.
It was digitally released on the 20th of October 2009, as a free download from the band’s website: www.thewatermarkhigh.co.za. The physical release of the album (a limited edition digi-pack with additional artwork and bonus tracks) was launched in Pretoria on the 27th of November 2009.
The Watermark High’s debut music video for a song called “Love Made Code” off “Loneliness As An Art Form” is currently in rotation on MK. The band aims to launch and promote the album in other parts of the country throughout 2010.
