Hey Electrotrash heads. Some time back you may have read a blog post about the Red Bull Music Studios down in Cape Town.

Following on from that I’d like to introduce a regular Electrotrash post to do with the RB studios. As many people would agree, Cape Town is a hub of mad electronica, being the hometown of African Dope and the mid 2000 wave of brilliant glitch-hop courtesy of the Real Estates, Waddy Jones, Considerate Builders Scheme and many more.

There are a whole new wave of beat-smiths, emcees and DJs coming up the ranks and over the past months I’ve gotten into the rhythm of getting these guys into the Red Bull Studios to make music. Of course they’re all pretty amped to get stuck in, cause we have some sweet noise making artillery down here.

And it doesn’t stop in Cape Town. Of course anyone familiar with this blog will know that cities like Pretoria, Joburg and Durban have their fair share of sonic-manipulating genius. We’re going to endeavour to get as many mad music makers from around the country into the studio to bring the noise.

All the music coming out of the studio will be available on the exclusive Red Bull Studio blog at www.redbullstudioza.com. Of course the blog is just starting out, whereas Electrotrash is the online hub for local electronica, being around since before some of the artists on here even knew what an oscillator was. This column will be a roundup of the great electronic music coming out of the Red Bull Studios in Cape Town and wherever possible I’ll make sure to get exclusive content onto Electrotrash for all your downloading pleasure.

Kicking things off is this Dubstep remix of DJ MX’s “Like I See You” featuring song bird Black Porcelain. While the original is a rolling South African house number, not really in line with Electrotrash’s vibe, the remix is a dark, asthmatic juggernaut that fits in perfectly with the meteorically rising Dubstep scene in Cape Town.

These tracks were recorded and produced during the Red Bull Music Academy Taster some months back at the studios. The taster, dubbed ‘A Third World Perspective’ saw 20 music minds from around South Africa come together to share knowledge with music greats such as Sipho Hotstix and Trevor Jackson for three days. Before I leave I would like to introduce one last musical innovation courtesy of the world’s biggest energy drink: Red Bull Music Academy Radio. Step Up’s long lost great has returned to Cape Town and will be destroying the floor with some fresh tunes on wax straight outta London Town.

DANJA
For any of you who don’t already know Danja, one of DnB’s pioneers in Cape Town, now you will have the chance to witness his skills. He will be playing his first much anticipated dubstep set.

dj low
dj low has been pumping dancefloors for a good few years now. His little dubstep teaser at 300 AD was enough to get anyone in hearing range excited, so check him out!

Ofcourse you all know Ish our step up resident, after a month break she will be back with some new wax ready to mash up the floor.

Wow my inbox has just been receiving quite a lot of new South African electronic music the past few days and I’ve been trying to get to it and more keeps piling in… so I figured, just make one big post with a bunch of new stuff in it!

It also seems that as soon as I go and say that dubstep isn’t the biggest genre in South Africa, I get a ton of it thrown at me… not that I’m complaining here! I present to you a couple more dubstep mixes… one mix from Cape Town crew, ScarCream and another mix from Jo’burg folks, INISHI8!

Richard The Third is a really busy dude when it comes to making awesome music. He dropped me a mail with the details of a mix he did for a project of his under the name of “Biscope”! So now we have even more proof that Cape Town is definitely taking the lead when it comes to dubstep in South Africa!

Fiction, on Long Street, Cape Town, hosts a monthly dubstep party called “Step Up!” and you are sure to catch Richard The Third dropping some great tunes in some shape or form. The Step Up! parties have a Facebook group, so why not join it and stay in the loop? Link to the group here!

Dubstep isn’t the biggest genre in South Africa but ScarCream certainly make it a well represented one! A live duo banging out sweet beats with a pounding rhythm, they have been taking Cape Town on and bring them some awesome live beats. Personally, I really like their music and am looking forward to hearing more from them in the future.
