Something a little different for our readers today… Here is a mobile application that I thought would be worthwhile sharing with all of you.

FOUND, powered by Le Cool, is a free mobile service that is available to all of you that have Nokia handsets. Basically what it does is keep you in the know of all the rad cultural stuff your city has to offer. The application has recently been launched in South Africa, specifically for Johannesburg,  Durban and Cape Town and is also currently available for Sydney, Dubai, Vienna, Rotterdam, Lisbon, Paris, Moscow and Istanbul for the rest of the world.

I downloaded the application and ran it on my Nokia for roughly a week just to see what kind of content the application would link me to. I set my location to Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town over various days just to see what it had to offer for the available South African cities .

The app itself is very slick looking and worked awesomely in both vertical and horizontal orientation which is always nice. FOUND loads up to it’s home screen  and shows you up and coming events / restaurants / films depending on how you set it up (you can set three categories that it filters content from). The user interface is nice and simple with the screen being left uncluttered by menus and unnecessary things. I’ll run you through my experience of each of the categories FOUND allows you to browse through.

“Culture” is the first option on the list and surprisingly always had a lot of content to choose from. Market theatre square happenings, fashion week, comedy nights, art fairs and a bunch of theatres showcasing various plays and performances, wine tours, city tours and even (for some strange reason) the odd ball entry of the Vida e caffe Greenside.

“Eating” contains a whole bunch of eateries ranging from bakeries to cafes to full blown gourmet restaurants offering the urbanite looking for a bite to eat a whole bunch of classy options. Each eatery has a rough guide on the price, hours and a little write up on the place. The list is fairly comprehensive and provides a nice guide to check out when you can’t decide on where to go.

“Film” provides a pretty comprehensive list of films that are being released as well as what is already showing. The Cape Town listing even includes the Labia Theatre which is pretty cool. The prices and times of the films is also available with a short summary of what the specific film is about.

“Music” seems to be pretty full in the Cape Town listing having entries ranging from jazz to acoustic sets to tango evenings. Durban and Johannesburg turned up very little over the week, which was a bit disappointing.

“Nightlife” was disappointing all round. Le Cool provides some pretty unusual club happenings for the cities in other countries but for the South African version it seems to only be big corporate events with the odd smaller party or club being hardly featuring. It would be nice to see even smaller events listed here to give some variety from the mainstream events that dominate here.

The final category to choose from is “Recommended” which is a decent overview of all the categories selecting some pretty rad items to do in a week. Think “I’ll totally use this when I go there for holiday again”!

No matter what category you choose an item from, it always shows you a price range so you know what to expect, a write up on the specific entry and has three nifty buttons to click on… You can show the specific place using your GPS and Ovi maps on your phone, send the details of the event / restaurant / place to a friend via sms / email or you can jump to the item in questions website and get more information there. There are also little surprises in each entry in terms of free give aways etc.

All in all the FOUND application is definitely something to check out, even if it’s just to help you decide on what to eat that night! FOUND is a powerful app that integrates brilliantly with your phone and makes use of the features available to it awesomely. Hopefully as time goes by more and more interesting and unusual options for parties and music will show up in the service although only time will tell.

Based in London, Trevor Jackson founded the label Output Recordings in 1996, which introduced the world to such genre defying and inventive bands and acts as LCD Soundsystem, the Rapture, Four Tet and his own project Playgroup which helped create the blueprint for present day electro.

Over the ten years that Output was in existence, Trevor helped put out no less than 100 records and the label is considered to be one of the biggest influences and driving forces behind the sound of the modern dancefloor. His DJ mix for the series DJ Kicks, is much like his own approach to making music and remixing: an eclectic mash of sounds that traverse the sonic spectrum. He is also a prolific remixer having started reworking tracks as early as 1991 for the likes of Massive Attack and U2 under the name Underdog.

Other than having such a profound influence on present day dance music with his labels output (excuse the pun), his own productions, remixes and DJ sets, Trevor is also an amazing designer, having designed and created the artwork for many of the artists released through Output. His visual art career dates back to the early 90′s with his company, Bite It!, designing record covers for acts such as the Stereo MC’s, the Jungle Brothers and Todd Terry.

I like music. It tickles the soul like a puppy licking your feet while you sleep on the couch. Stupid dog. I play this music to lots of dancing people. Sometimes I play it to few dancing people but they’re dancing all the same. I have been known to cart my heavy box of records all over town. Mine and yours. It used to hurt my shoulder but not so much anymore as I use Serato and carrying a laptop ain’t no thang. I carry my dainty little laptop case and ginger Serato control records into Art School, Sub Club and Ivy in Glasgow on the regular. Many people have been captivated by my dazzling array of track suit tops but better yet they’ve seen fit to ask me to wear them while playing my favourite songs to pretty girls in exotic locations. Recent months have seen my passport stamped at Fiction Bar in Cape Town, Divan Du Monde in Paris, Funk & Beyond in Moscow, Public Service Festival in Copenhagen, Scratch in Gothenburg, Cafe Leopold in Vienna, Arkestra Soulsystem in Vigo, Urbarritmo in Zaragoza, Sub Sub in Ljubljana, Lake Of Stars Festival on Lake Malawi, Rockness 2008 in Inverness, The Big Chill Festival 2008, Bestival 2007 & 2008 on the Isle of Wight, Connect Festival 2008 in Inverary, Illectricity in Zagreb, Keep Up, Cargo and Plan B in London, Djangos Riff in Liverpool, Wall Of Balls in Sheffield, La Musique in Derry, Native and The Tube in Bristol, Edinburgh’s Cabaret Voltaire, New Bohemia in Leeds, World Headquarters in Newcastle, Snafu in Aberdeen, The Marisco Night Club in Woolacombe, Stiff Kitten and Radio K in Belfast, Buffalo Bar in Cardiff, Monkey Cafe in Swansea and the VIP opening of the Middlesbrough Institute Of Modern Art . During the day I play Top Trumps with my favourite musical pals through my Mixed Bizness and How’s Your Party? club nights. DJ Food & DK, Annie Mac, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Fake Blood, C2C, Sinden, Greenskeepers, Krafty Kuts, Kid Koala, Fingathing, DJ Format, Edan, DJ Kentaro, Hint, Mary Anne Hobbs, Bass Clef, Zinc, Xxxchange, Cool Kids, Chromeo and many more have all had their presence requested for tea and biscuits round my flat before a night on the tiles. I get them to unwittingly sign spare album covers for E-Bay auctions, thinking they’re ‘Making a big fan really happy’. Suckers.

I’m lucky enough to have found favour with Ninja Tune’s Solid Steel crew and have had many a 3 deck Boom Monk work out aired on their weekly radio show. It’s broadcast in 30 countries worldwide as well as on the old information super highway so get listening. In 2006 I kicked the arse out of Mr Scruff, Kid Koala, MANDY, James Holden, Cut Chemist, DJ Format, Hexstatic and the rest as the label and the show’s listeners voted me runner up in their ‘Best Of 2006’ Poll. I was only beaten by cut n paste in your face legend Steinski but he used Ableton for his and we all know that’s cheating. In 2007 I came in 3rd which is not bad at all. In 2008 I had the honour of being made an official Solid Steel and Ninja Tune DJ. Watch out Strictly Kev. I’m coming for ya! I also stutter confused one way dialogue into a microphone while showing off my latest white labels on behalf of budding maverick broadcasters Subcity Radio and Radio Magnetic.

It’s fun and not quite a real job. Beat that for a living.
