So here it is, another bumper addition of brand new South African electronica! First up, a new track from Oceans & Cities, keeping in his usual ambiant style.

Secondly we have a remix that DJ Lapse did of AC/DC’s “Back In Black”

And then lastly we have a new artist, Shotbeak, up. He kindly sent us a 6 track E.P. as well as a 9 track album for your aural pleasure! Grab a track off each album below as a sampler, and if you like them head over to our Downloads section here to download both the albums!

So as I’m sure many of you know, Lark will be touring South Africa at the end of this month… here is the official press release from Griet Artists regarding the tour:

This tour is LARK’s once off return to SA after precisely 1 year since their last show at the 2008 RAMFEST. The band was approached by RAMFEST towards the end of last year and asked if Paul would consider doing a LARK show at the festival if they flew him back from the UK, where he resides now. The band jumped at the chance to play with one another again and hence decided to do a tour around this performance.

They have titled the tour “BRAVE” after the bands new single. LARK are also using this opportunity to release a live DVD of their concert held at the Pavilion Theatre in JUNE 2007 titled “A Dagger and a Feather” where they invited guest artists Johnny de Ridder (Fokofpolisiekar) and Kyla Rose Smith (Freshlyground) to perform alongside the band and a classical string section with VJ Grrrl on visuals. The stage was decked out in playroom props to emulate a children’s playroom with an eery look and feel to it. The concert was recorded in 5.1 surround. This is to date the most extravagant performance of the bands career in terms of the time and effort that went into this show to ensure first class showmanship and visual representation of the bands creative performance ideals.

This DVD will be a double disk release with a LIVE audio surround sound recording of the concert with music videos and additional interviews with all those involved in the “A Dagger and a Feather” concert.

The DVD will be available for R150 at the shows.

The Tour

Lark will be performing the following dates:

• 5th MAR – Tings en Times, Pretoria with Yesterday’s Pupil
• 6th MAR – Back2Basix, Johannesburg, with Yesterday’s Pupil
• 7th MAR – Burn, Durban, with Yesterday’s Pupil
• 11th MAR – Klein Libertas, Stellenbosch, with Sparky Boy
• 13th MAR – Assembly, Cape Town, with (still to be confirmed)

Yesterday’s Pupil has been selected at the official opening act for the Gauteng and Kwa-Zulu Natal leg of the tour. He is a one man performer that coordinates live production and sampling with acoustic drumming, live guitar and vocal arrangements. His debut album ‘Errors of Enthusiasm’ is a profoundly fresh approach to electronic music-making and his combination of traditional rock with new wave electro and noticeable pop sensibilities results in music that is approachable and great stuff to groove to! His work is very new in the South African music scene and we have found him to be one of the most impressive and original acts on or local stages.

RickDisco says: So we have a new writer on board, so welcome to Jason D! He hit the last Unit.r launch party in Stellenbosch and although I took long to post it, he has the review below to say! There are also some pics from the show in our Gallery!

Friday saw the fifth and last leg promoting the release of Unit.r’s debut album, Phosphenes. In going with the (stereotypical) tradition of Stellenbosch, I’ll use just one word to cover the show…
Lekker.

Getting there early, as in two hours early, I had plenty of time to check the stream of fans, new and old alike, coming in. Because I’m so lekker and popular I knew about three people there. Stellenbosch seems to have a scene of it’s own, with hardly any of the nu-rave, indiesque peeps we see inside and around the City Bowl area of Cape Town. Honestly, the crowd was incredibly diverse. It looked as if every clique had sent diplomats. There were the walking tanks, teenie-boppers, those super hot prep girls and even a dude with a purple velvet jacket!

Unit.R hit the stage first, which I thought pretty damn arb seeing as it was their album launch. This was the first time that I got to watch Unit.R live and true to what RickDisco had told me, they’re crazier than a gang of Hells Angels at a Rolling Stone show. Each of the three vocalists has a unique voice that gels really well with the others. Lekker live shows are definitely a past time for these guys, with the atmosphere ranging from chilled out grooving to apeshit boogying.

Max Normal.TV took the stage to an almost painful amount of cheering. Damn, those Stellies kids love their Hip-Hop. Max Normal.TV seemed to get a much bigger (and crazier) response, although I’m gonna put it down to their extreme visuals (men. naked. slapping.) and the fact that they’ve released a ton of tracks for download.

The show ended pretty early, would have been sweet if Justin de Nobrega (Unit.R, Max Normal.TV) ended the night with some Considerate Builders Scheme tunes. Hey, you can’t blame me for being an optimist. Cape Town without doubt has the country by the balls when it comes to awesome music, crazy live shows and sweet venues.
