Thanks to a reference to this remix competition on the MIO website, I went and did a bit more reading about this pretty exciting remix competition that opened up at the beginning of the month.

Creative Cape Town have partnered with BPM magazine, Mutha FM and Paul Bothner Music to bring this fantastic competition to the public. For those that don’t know, Creative Cape Town is an initiative designed to promote and manage Cape Towns city centre, by combining both the public and private sectors. For more about what they do, have a look at their website over here!

From the competition website:

“Creative Cape Town started to wonder what Cape Town’s distinctive music idiom is, and felt goema, at the heart of jazz standards by Abdullah Ibrahim, Robbie Jansen and Basil “Mannenberg” Coetzee, was it.” … “We’re challenging musicians nationwide to use Cape Town’s distinctive music idiom and put it at the heart of your sound, and enter the Goematronics Remix Competition.”

The competition runs from 1 July to 28 August 2011 and all that you have to do to qualify is load at least one goema-inspired remix onto the Goematronics group on SoundCloud before midnight on 28 August 2011! First prize includes a full week’s worth of Red Bull Studio time valued at R35 000, as well as studio software Cakewalk from Paul Bothner Music, valued at R5 500.

Entrants are welcome to download Goema samples from Soundcloud or to create their own, its really open up to anything! The competition organisers were also kind enough to include tracks by Kalahari Surfers, Fletcher (Krushed & Sorted), Mr Mo and Peter A and Erefaan Pearce to give you an idea of what can be done!

HAEZER has finally decided on the winner of the Crack In The Wall Remix Competition!

The winning entry is the Chains remix! Check out the Top 5 post for all of the entries! CONGRATULATIONS from all of us at electrotrash! HAEZER had this to say about the competition as well as the winning entry:

“After listening to all the remixes over and over and also playing to peers and management I’ve finally come to an answer.

Although I love all the remixes in the Top 5 I decided on the Chains remix for it’s originality and creativity.

I would like to thank everyone that took part in the comp and hope you get all the blog love and exposure you deserve for the remixes… and even though I chose Chains I’ll definitely drop the other remixes in my sets as well.

Props to everyone that was involved in this comp, especially electrotrash for all the support and good luck to all the producers for 2010… keep up the good work and banging tracks.

HAEZER emailed me this morning with an important message! There were loads of downloads of the separates for the remix competition but not that many entries so we have decided to give you an extension until the end of January!

So new deadline… January 31 2010!

The hard hitting, banger boasting HAEZER is back on electrotrash with some super exciting news! He wants you to remix his track “Crack In The Wall”. The best remix, as judged by him, will be featured on his E.P. being launched soon as well as on a European tour next year!  So instead of prize money or something like, you will simply get MAD exposure!

HAEZER is looking for a banging remix, something around 130 BPM. Thats it.

The competition ends mid January 2010, exact date will be announced closer to the time is 15 January 2010 so get remixing!

Popskarr are Cape Towns’ newest “Electro/Pop/Disco/Experimental/AfroPop/Epic” group consisting of chronic remixer Lapse and Angolan/Congolese/Belgium born singer IAmWaves. They have decided to inject their music with some soul. Their first single from their upcoming album is called Tonight and they were kind enough to offer it as a free download along with a remix by Mr. Vega! They have also decided to have a remix competition, with the winner being featured on their MySpace page and possibly on the album as well! Expect a full artist bio soon, but in the mean time grab the tracks below.

The track is dominated by a simple arp and kick + snare combo that create space for spacey pads and very soulful vocals. A beautiful slow-burner, that grows on you more and more after each listen.

This remix takes the track in a whole new direction. Think nu-italo disco, complete with claps and a fast arp. In the background you hear a synth that seems like it’s take straight from a horror film. Mr. Vega takes the track from a slow, smooth soulful number and ups the tempo, yet somehow IAmWaves’ vocals seem to allow the soul to remain.
