On the 24th of January, YESTERDAY’S PUPIL released the second part of his second album for FREE DOWNLOAD. Part 2, entitled DUEL! comes after the release of Part 1, Singularity, on the 1st of November 2011.

Part 2 consists of two singles, namely The Beast ft. Tumi Molekane and Harm – both of which integrates the central theme of a battle and thus suitably entitled ‘DUEL!’. Both of the songs were written before the songs from Singularity, recorded long after they were written and are noticeably less poppy.

“The Beast is an epic tune in which Tumi portrays the role of the beast. I mixed rather long and hard on this song due to the copious amount of layers and elements.”

All four songs released thus far, reflects the fact that Yesterday’s Pupil undoubtedly is not sticking to one genre for his second album. There are many layers and themes to the album which clearly illustrates its diversity. Several versions of both songs on DUEL! were recorded before finding the right one.

“Harm is about realizing that sometimes what you think of as freedom, is only greed. I believe that every person at some point in their life mistakes greed for freedom.”

Thanks to a reference to this remix competition on the MIO website, I went and did a bit more reading about this pretty exciting remix competition that opened up at the beginning of the month.

Creative Cape Town have partnered with BPM magazine, Mutha FM and Paul Bothner Music to bring this fantastic competition to the public. For those that don’t know, Creative Cape Town is an initiative designed to promote and manage Cape Towns city centre, by combining both the public and private sectors. For more about what they do, have a look at their website over here!

From the competition website:

“Creative Cape Town started to wonder what Cape Town’s distinctive music idiom is, and felt goema, at the heart of jazz standards by Abdullah Ibrahim, Robbie Jansen and Basil “Mannenberg” Coetzee, was it.” … “We’re challenging musicians nationwide to use Cape Town’s distinctive music idiom and put it at the heart of your sound, and enter the Goematronics Remix Competition.”

The competition runs from 1 July to 28 August 2011 and all that you have to do to qualify is load at least one goema-inspired remix onto the Goematronics group on SoundCloud before midnight on 28 August 2011! First prize includes a full week’s worth of Red Bull Studio time valued at R35 000, as well as studio software Cakewalk from Paul Bothner Music, valued at R5 500.

Entrants are welcome to download Goema samples from Soundcloud or to create their own, its really open up to anything! The competition organisers were also kind enough to include tracks by Kalahari Surfers, Fletcher (Krushed & Sorted), Mr Mo and Peter A and Erefaan Pearce to give you an idea of what can be done!

The minute I heard about this I just had to share it with all of you… Imagine awesome German electronicians Modeselektor, Gebrüder Teichmann and  Jahcoozi in Africa… Imagine them doing what they do with a host of African musicians… Imagine the awesomeness that would blossom out of something like that.

Imagine BLNRB.

These talented folks got on a plane and flew all the way out to Nairobi, Kenya and started something incredible. Teaming up with local talent from Kenya… Living, working, making music and performing all together in one space, now dubbed the Madhouse, BLNRB went from an idea into some incredibly interesting music.

The album “BLNRB – Welcome to the Madhouse” features 18 original recordings which in turn feature more than 20 artists spread over the tracks. The album is a perfect culmination of high tech west with the love and passion of Africa… a new sound, something uniquely different.

Various Assets 2010

Music Created At The Red Bull Music Academy in London

It’s one thing to bond with someone who uses the same software. But it’s another to share a studio with a drummer who builds instruments out of tin cans, an analog funk apostle let loose on digital synths for the first time, a budding Brazilian bossa nova composer or a Grammy-nominated anti-pop singer from Mexico. The thirteenth edition of the Red Bull Music Academy in London saw an incredibly diverse musical output. The resulting sampler, Various Assets – Not For Sale 2010, pays testament to a once-in-a-lifetime set of musical circumstances: collaborations between people who’d never met before, but who found contrasting keys next to Tower Bridge.

The sixth in a yearly series, this double CD is not for sale, but is instead sent out to all the musicians who’ve ever been a part of the Academy, as well as music lovers in 32 countries. The comp is a snapshot of what goes on in the Academy studios – and also provides a unique window into diverse scenes & sounds from the places these musicians hail from.

For the two South African participants who attended the Academy in London, the young urban house ambassadors DJ MP6-60 and Jullian Gomez, Various Assets – Not For Sale 2010 is an amazing showcase of not only their brilliant musicality but also their ability to collaborate with the best in their field. Both artists had the opportunity to work with the extraordinary Robin Hannibal whose rich, future-soul released on acclaimed labels like Ubiquity, has received wide-spread praise. “I Need Your Love” by Robin Hannibal and Jullian Gomes fuses the stylised sounds of house and techno with the classic feel and groove of soul  music with ease while “Rocking All Night” by Master MP6-60 and Robin Hannibal imagines a world of low-slung synthadelic funk ruled by George Clinton and Dr. Dre.

Ultimately, this compilation is a freeform expression of music celebrated and pulled apart in sleepless studio time. Collaborations between like-minded folks, with the excitement of what tomorrow might bring.
