On the 24th of January, YESTERDAY’S PUPIL released the second part of his second album for FREE DOWNLOAD. Part 2, entitled DUEL! comes after the release of Part 1, Singularity, on the 1st of November 2011.

Part 2 consists of two singles, namely The Beast ft. Tumi Molekane and Harm – both of which integrates the central theme of a battle and thus suitably entitled ‘DUEL!’. Both of the songs were written before the songs from Singularity, recorded long after they were written and are noticeably less poppy.

“The Beast is an epic tune in which Tumi portrays the role of the beast. I mixed rather long and hard on this song due to the copious amount of layers and elements.”

All four songs released thus far, reflects the fact that Yesterday’s Pupil undoubtedly is not sticking to one genre for his second album. There are many layers and themes to the album which clearly illustrates its diversity. Several versions of both songs on DUEL! were recorded before finding the right one.

“Harm is about realizing that sometimes what you think of as freedom, is only greed. I believe that every person at some point in their life mistakes greed for freedom.”

Oxblood is Cape Town producer Robin Brink. He as put together a mix of his unreleased demo tracks as well as produced a slick, projection based video for his track Subequator Loop, which showcases his work with the Lightworks collective. Glitch and breaks, as well as playful melodies are the foundation on which this music is built. Straddling the line between instrumental hip hop and electronic music, Oxblood is definitely one to watch in 2012. With his latest remix, Who Killed JR takes the moody, dreamy Midnight City by M83 out of its after hours club feel and injects some 2am energy. With the piano intro, he adds an accoustic touch. Jacking the bass and drums up a notch, and gating the main synth gives the track that WKJR feel while staying faithful to the leitmotiv of the original. Nuff said, grab it!

‘Funk Deluxe’ and ‘Spy Vs Spy’ were a series of events that kept the Cape Town party elite dancing Back2Back to hours of Authentic House Music. Join us on the 15th of December as Funk Deluxe and Spy Vs. Spy come together again.

Both inspired by the concept of back 2 back dj battles- these two successful event brands have taken House Music lovers on deep and intense music journeys each time they’ve graced the nightclubs around Cape Town over the past 10 years. With roots in soul moving, dancefloor destroying, Deep House- the concept sees 2 Dj’s behind the decks in a purging game of track by tack one upmanship.

More and Deluxe are two of the venues that played witness to these battles- Spy vs Spy took just two chosen ones- your solid selectors for one long set of Top Tune glory, while Funk Deluxe split neatly into quarters, giving eight players four rounds to raise the roof. The tales would be told and retold for days and weeks and months after, in an era before social media where word-of-mouth spread the movement.

Every now and then it’s nice to take a journey back to where we came from, to where a few very good stories began. This time the joining of these two events brings together 10 DJ’s that have influenced the Deep and Tech House scene- both the unforgettable icons from the original days and the music connoisseurs that rock the Mother City each weekend today.

Spy vs. Spy and Funk Deluxe bring you SpyDeluxe at Chukka Churri, 20 Coburn St Greenpoint (Corner of Prestwich and Coburn) from 9pm -until the venue kick us out- on Thursday 15 December. Space is limited so get there early to avoid disappointment and make the most of this special music line-up – it just doesn’t sound as good from the street. Friday is a public holiday and it’s FREE ENTRANCE all night!

Released today, Boss is the latest single from Richard The Third. We really loved the track when he first released the teaser. In his words the single is:

“mix up the sounds of Purple Funk with local Kwaito Flava, collaborating with Alexandra Township emcee and singer, Rebone. The track “Boss” is straight up dancefloor bizniss featuring wobbly synth leads, bashing drums and township swaggering rap. The single also features a hyper-drum smashing remix by SA Dubstep king, SFR and a low-slung, narcotic thug-hop remix by the up-and-coming prolific Das Kapital alongside the syncopated, Afro-Tech quirky “Pilchards” on the digital flip.”
