On the 24th of January, YESTERDAY’S PUPIL released the second part of his second album for FREE DOWNLOAD. Part 2, entitled DUEL! comes after the release of Part 1, Singularity, on the 1st of November 2011.

Part 2 consists of two singles, namely The Beast ft. Tumi Molekane and Harm – both of which integrates the central theme of a battle and thus suitably entitled ‘DUEL!’. Both of the songs were written before the songs from Singularity, recorded long after they were written and are noticeably less poppy.

“The Beast is an epic tune in which Tumi portrays the role of the beast. I mixed rather long and hard on this song due to the copious amount of layers and elements.”

All four songs released thus far, reflects the fact that Yesterday’s Pupil undoubtedly is not sticking to one genre for his second album. There are many layers and themes to the album which clearly illustrates its diversity. Several versions of both songs on DUEL! were recorded before finding the right one.

“Harm is about realizing that sometimes what you think of as freedom, is only greed. I believe that every person at some point in their life mistakes greed for freedom.”

Adding a new face to the Electrotrash family this week, we have SFR all the way from Cape Town. As a producer of all things BASS, SFR has been doing his thing for the past 7 years, culminating in a numnber of international releases in the UK and US. Audiophile 021 is one of the artists that should have been on Electrotrash a long time ago, but … Better late than never as they say! As the name implies Audiophile021 hails from the bass-loving city that is Cape Town. This talented producer is constantly pushing out new, glitchy and dirty beats, one wonders if he ever actually sleeps. For more info and links to his social media check out his artist page here!

8-bit synthesis is beautiful. When you layer an 8-bit arp over deep bass, with a slight wobble, sprinkle some triplets on the hats with a shattering snare and a pounding kick to finish things of and you get a track that ticks all the boxes.

Audiophile 021 - Informer

Quarter Mile is the title track of his latest EP  which you can buy from Juno. Dark and minimal, the bass drum scrubs and wobbles, while the snare is sharp with the faintest reverb, much like a heavy ball bearing bouncing one on a steel plate. Slightly hidden below the surface, the deep bass bounces thanks to some tight side-chain action.

Jam Jarr hail from the African Dope stables, a power house in South African electronic music. Consisting of Soundproof on beats and bass and Bakaman on the mic, this Cape Town based duo, deliver deep bass, breaksy beats and flowing rhymes. For more info check out their artist page here!

Neck Low is a grinding dubstep track featuring raw rhymes and phat, wobbly bass. Dirty than Mike Rowe at a pig farm, Neck Low will have you dipping & grinding from the first beat and trying to keep up with the rhymes being spat at you at a vicious pace. The track comes off the Fat Fruit EP available from African Dope here.

A most ferocious take on the Dupstep genre by those Glitch fanatics Jam Jarr. It’s got raps delivered at break-neck speeds, and bass that is hand-delivered to your face. This one is not for the faint-hearted.

Cape Town based DJ and Producer, Battle Beyond the Stars, has just completed his first EP entitled Memory. The track Cold, which I mentioned previously, is taken from this EP, as are the two songs below. His sound is both nostalgic and fresh. To find out a bit more about this talent producer of electronic nostalgia, check out his Artist page and remember to hit The Assembly tonight to catch his set.

Memory Metal is like taking a drive down memory lane with a hangover from the night before. Gentle and subtle, the intro is led by a palm-muted guitar chord progression and a simple lead guitar melody. Add to this a pretty straight forward drum pattern and the severly distorted bass synth that follows, is an unexpected, but not unwelcome surprise. The synth really transforms the track from a gentle, summer melody into a song with more substance and emotion.

Battle Beyond the Stars - Memory Metal

The second track features what can only be described as synthesised steel drums, distorted and filtered beyond recognition, producing a playful melody over Rock & Roll drums and a squelching bass synth. Think of this as the soundtrack to Fear and Loathing in Jamaica. [Rum Diaries? -ed.]

Who Killed JR? is back with a brand new remix. This time he is taking on legen-waitforit-dary, French duo, Daft Punk and their classic Robot Rock. But I am getting ahead of myself.  Usually when posting a track by a new artist, the post is accompanied by a shiny & new artist page. We kind of skipped that in this case and so I am glad that we can finally, officially call Who Killed JR? a part of the electrotrash family. The Robot Rock remix is itself quite epic. Although the original was a great track, that sampled guitar riff from Release the Beast by Breakwater does become a bit monotonous. The remix overcomes this by chopping the guitars up and layering filtered guitar arps over everything. The execution is perfect and you would be forgiven for thinking that this some unreleased Daft Punk edit. The track continually builds that by the time the final break hits all layers are of such epic proportions that the track simply feels massive! With the amount of Daft Punk remixes floating around, it easy to get lost in the sounds, but this one is bound to stick out amongst the rest as one of the greats. You could perhaps be forgiven for missing the first release, Ware Verhaal, by Pretoria based bittereinder, but unless you’re one of the last remaining people without a facebook profile (you’re not an aspiring youth politician are you?) you must have stumbled across the video for A Tale of Three Cities, their second release which made the rounds online the past few weeks.

But I am getting ahead of myself. Bittereinder is a trio of talented producers, lyricists and visualists(?) that hail from Pretoria and have been succesfully creating their own sights and sounds for years before joining forces. Check out their brand new artists page for a full bio.

The second single is, as the name implies, a tale of three cities. Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town to be exact. Ajax delievers the first verse, which actually made me a little homesick for the old 012… Next the lyrical skills of Tumi Molekane poetically paint a lyrical picture of the City of Gold. Finally, Jack Parow reminds me why I moved down to Cape Town. The production is relaxed and reflective. Uplifting and thoughtful. The video, simple but effective.

Their first single got its video treatment courtesy of Louis Minnaar. You may remember the cool video he did for Yesterday’s Pupil a while back. It has an almost TV Show intro theme feel to it. The song sounds whimsical which contrasts well with the deeper lyrics, layered as they are across a playful melody.

Both singles come off their new album ‘n Ware Verhaal (a true story) which is available in all good music stores nation wide as well as online at rhythmmusicstore.com for a mere 77 rond! Get it!

Sparrow are a new and exciting electro duo out of Cape Town, South Africa. Comprised of Gareth H. Graham and Gavin Gilowey, they bring an interesting blend of electro house, pounding drum beats and orchestral swells to the Cape Town scene. You can find them in our Artists page here!
